Accelerated Turn Timer for Inactivity

Postby Sacerdotalist » 01 March 2017, 02:15

The Problem: A player abandons a game without quitting/conceding. All subsequent turns take the full turn timer, and the game takes a long, boring time to finish to avoid conceding.

Suggestion: if no keyboard/controller input for two turns, that players turn timer starts at 30 seconds the following turn, then 10 seconds for all subsequent turns. If input is detected within the first 10 seconds of the turn, the timer reverts to normal minus elapsed time.

It'd take like... a minute to write a program to send a no-utility keypress to the game once every few seconds... possibly less using an easy scripting program like AutoHotkey. If people want to grief you they'll get around any simplistic measures like that. Instead you need to have "activity" based on actually taking game-related actions, not something trivial like keypresses or window focus or whatever.
Friendly Reminder: Correlation does not equal Causation - tattoo it on the inside of your eyelids if it'll help.

Literally nobody will do this. Your lack of understanding of public behavior is showing again.

Heh, yeah.. I'm such a pessimist.. when in reality people are dying to act in each other's best interests! They're all one rap on the knuckles away from a life of righteous merit, so lets send them down that golden path!

Certainly one of us doesn't understand people ;)

The percentage of gamers in the overal population, willing to use unofficial mods on a game is pretty low. The percentage willing to do so just to grief is presumably lower. Not to mention that most people would have 0 clue how to program this.

How many people do you think it takes before the probability of two of them having the same birthday reaches the "more likely than not" point? It doesn't take large percentages to have a significant effect.

Do keep in mind, as well, that people don't do this solely to grief, they do it for personal advantage - to both avoid accruing concessions and to get a shot at annoying the other player into giving them a concession victory without any effort.

Given the frequency with which AFKing is being reported, it's obviously not that isolated and infrequent a behaviour... it might represent a low percentage of games (though.. it doesn't, depending on your definition of low percentage) but it's frequent enough that people are noticing.

It only takes one.
