Alkinoe: Queen of the Casualty

The single-season casualty mark, one of those most coveted OFL records, has been shattered this season. Formerly held by a bruising Orc blitzer named Brok'in Toof, the old record of 27 has already been eclipsed and another week still remains in Season 5. What massive monstrosity has savaged the players of the Old World Football League? A savage Chaos Warrior? A colossal Yhetee? A drunk Troll Slayer? Nay, it was...a girl.

Alkinoe the Queen of the Stars of the Itza Chainsaws, started her career meekly enough with a mere 7 casualties. However in her second season, this Amazon Blitzer showed her true lust for carnage, dancing across the pitch in a whirlwind of blood and her signature pancake slam that has already left 37 players crippled (or wishing they were!) Her breakout game came week 9 against Tzompantli when she brutalized 7 lizard players.

With the single-season crown firmly on her sultry head, Alkinoe has set her sights on the 52-casualty career mark currently held by the legendary Minotaur, Mulcana. Will the Amazon goddess be the one to finally tame the Oblivion Knight's mad bull? All eyes are on Season 6 as we all hail Alkinoe: Queen of the Casualty!

OFTL Update: September

The OFL's Franchise league is only one part of our community. A large section of games occur through the Old World Football Tournament League (OFTL). The OFTL is the community open league, designed around pick-up games and variety of tournaments. The OFTL features persistent stat tracking and a dynamic tournament generator open to all coaches. Here are some of the latest happenings in the OFTL:

Featured Tournament: PRESTIGE OPEN

Image

TrickIce debuts his new series of tournaments with the Prestige Open. Finalists in Prestige Open tournaments will be automatically invited to any future Prestige Invitational tournament. Teams of any value may apply and there are no race restrictions. This is a great tournament for anyone new to the OFL/OFTL community, so make a new Blood Bowl team for the OFTL and sign up for this tournament today!

Tournament Wrap-Up: LOONEY TUNES 3

Image

The third installment of the OFTL's all Halfling and Goblin tournament, Looney Tunes, recently concluded with Astrospider's Da Green Weenies (Goblins) defending their title again. Da Green Weenies have claimed all Looney Tunes tournaments, defeating impressive Halfling teams in all three finals. Will they be able to keep the streak alive and make it four championships in a row? Stay "tuned" for the next Looney Tunes tournament. There are no team value restrictions and registration is open to any Goblin and Halfling OFTL team.

That concludes this issue of the OFTL Update. Next installment, we will look at one of the OFTL's mini-leagues. With only a couple weeks to go until their playoffs, only 1 1/2 points separate first place and sixth place in this 8-team league. It is anyone's game.

Join us at http://www.oldworldfootball.com

The OFTL is a great way to get familiar with the OFL Community. You can play as frequently or infrequently as you like. You can play the occasional pick-up game by finding other coaches in the chatbox on the forums, sign up for a tournament and compete for the championship title, or get involved in one of the mini-leagues (NFL League, Round-Robin, etc.) organized outside of the tournament system by enthusiastic OFTL coaches. Any team participating within the OFTL much be created solely for OFTL competition and may not play in any matches outside of the OFTL.

OFTL Update: September Part II

Given the fast-paced nature of the OFTL, coaches managing multiple teams in multiple tournaments, it seems fitting to drop two updates to keep up with everything happening. Here is what's going on in the OFTL:

Featured Tournament: OFL INVITATIONAL: OCTOBER 2011
The OFL Invitationals are a monthly tournament, offering up to sixteen OFTL coaches a structured means to build an OFL-eligible team. This is a highly coveted tournament, once dominated by one team, but in the latest competition in March a new team took hold of the title. This tournament, previously on hiatus, is now anyone's competition. Pre-register your team today!

Featured Side-League: JOURNEYMAN'S JOURNEY TOURNEY
Love journeymen and all their loner glory? Of course you do! 18Rabbit has concocted a unique competition in which your team begins with no permanent players. You start your first game with 11 borrowed players and at the end of each match you are able to purchase one of the journeymen to remain on your team. Winner of the cup will be the one who makes the best use of their basic linemen and inducements. For more information on how to create a team and register for this league, check out the Side-League subsection of the OFL Forums!

That concludes this issue of the OFTL Update. Next installment, we will have a wrap-up of one of the OFTL's mini-leagues. Their playoffs opened last night with #2 Unnatural Selection defeating #7 Rabbit's Rabble-Rousers 3-0. In the next update we will review the finale showdown between the top two teams before they square off to decide who wins it all.

The OFL congratulates Toast for winning the Season 5 Franchise League crown with his top-seeded Bad Moon Drifters. The necromantic squad terrorized the league, accumulating 9 wins, 5 draws, and only 2 losses over a championship season. Ironically, the team featured very few league stars, with only star Werewolf 'Slashy' McCool voted to the Pro Bowl, a further testament to Toast's coaching ability and excellent roster management.

Seeded #1 in the AFC, the Bad Moon Drifters received a bye in the opening wild card round before defeating division rival Godzillas, a liazardmen squad, 1-0 in the Quarterfinal round of the playoffs. In the Semifinals, the eventual champs faced a tough wood elf team, The Fallen Leaves, who had won their division for a second year after reaching the conference finals Season 4. The Drifters took the match 2-1 before facing their toughest competition to date. In a grueling match versus The Four UnHorsemen (khemri), the Bad Moon Drifters suffered the loss of both Wights, but managed to win 1-0 in Overtime to claim the AFC title.

Battered and bruised, the AFC champs faced the WFC representative, a highly regarded high elf team, Faith of the Fallen coached by Darken-Rahl. The first possession was dominated by the high elves, using their superior speed and ball handling to score quickly. The Bad Moon Drifters countered with a slow grind down the field. Animal (Flesh Golem) used his excellent blocking skills to consistently push the line forward and dominated the center of the pitch. As the half wound down, the necromantic squad chose to stall near the end zone. The choice almost cost them a score as the High Elves darted in and wrestled the ball loose, but failed to recover the ball in traffic. Star Werewolf, 'Slashy' McCool recovered the ball and scored the tying score as halftime expired.

Bad Moon Drifters received in the second half and once again marched slowly down the field. Having paid off the refs before the match, the necromantic squad freely fouled the high elf defenders, knocking Chase Brandstone (Blitzer), Faith of the Fallen's best blocker, out of the game. 'Slashy' McCool was the clear star of the game, finishing with 3 casualties, 1 KO, 3 stuns and a touchdown. The high elves fought nobly until the end, but the physical play only continued to mount against Faith of the Fallen before the Drifters finally scored the winning touchdown, executing the classic 2-1 grind victory, as time expired.

OFL fans can relive all of the Season 5 excitement right from our website. The replays from every game are available to download and view.
