Matchup with TV-difference greater than 500k

Postby Arne_ » 18 March 2017, 15:32

This isn't related to my experience, I just saw this posted at the end of a very long thread in the steam-forums and thought it may be posted here too. The matchmaking-system created a game (I think it was CCL) with a TV-difference greater than 500k, the game can be seen here:

Is this a bug or did this matchup happen due to the lack of alternatives?

It's being investigated.

It seems to have happened a few times, but with the records I have available to flag them up require deeper investigation. The info was passed to Netheos when we found it on Friday.

It seems that something broke in the MM end of last season. Since just looking at mordrek it did not happen in season I or II.

And to be honest, yes it is still a utterly small percentage of games, 160 odd games out of over 21000. But still it should not happen. So any quick fix would be largely appreciated.

An official statement on how those games will be handled, in respect to concede for example, since I find it hardly fair that people should stick around in a game that should never have happened in the first place.

Were the 160 matches random or is there a pattern in the opponents/races/date played etc?

No pattern I could see. Cyanide are looking into it.

In my experience any time this happens it is because the TV difference was less than 500k before journeymen were added.

IE the journeyman bug is still present regardless of claims to the contrary.

I've looked at that and it is not necessarily the case: there have been matchups where the difference is >500TV and there were no JMen.

That said, I know little more than this and will keep watching for it.

I think what we're seeing is related to the "priorty" aspect of the pooling system. Cyanide said that if a team didn't get a game in the previous pooling period, they get priority for matching in the next pooling period. My theory is that the priority flag supercedes the 500 TV limit.

Now, I have not looked at the more recent COL data (I'm not going to fight with goblinSpy to get it in a usable format) but there are a couple of instances of the >500 TV difference happening in the CCL3 data, and there's one pooling period in particular where we can see a scenario where that fits.

12-Feb-2017 23:04 --> DaDerz vs. vatrop --> TV Diff: 520 --> cTVP Diff: 670
12-Feb-2017 23:04 --> Whitetigerfist vs. Florishier ---> TV Diff: 60 --> cTVP Diff: 360

Now, normally we can only guess at whether someone was in the previous pool or not, but in this case, the pool ending at 22:59 had this match:

12-Feb-2017 22:59 --> Whitetigerfist vs. vatrop --> TV Diff: 380 --> cTVP Diff: 830

During the 5 minute pooling period, Whitetigerfist conceded to vatrop, and both of them managed to re-queue. If the system looks at the last pooling period to determine which teams should get priority matching, that would make both Whitetigerfist and vatrop priority teams, so it would look for the best match for each one of those rather than the best match among everyone pooled... and based on their cTVPlus rating, those are the matches we see... even though one of them goes past the 500 TV difference cap.
Friendly Reminder: Correlation does not equal Causation - tattoo it on the inside of your eyelids if it'll help.
